Murakami received his BFA, MFA, and PhD from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting). Murakami is inspired by Western culture, music and literature. His first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won the Gunzou Literature Prize for budding writers in 1979.
